The Bible is a remarkable book. It is a religious instruction book, a history book and a book of the most marvellous prophecies. We should remember that in Old Testament times a prophet could only attain the title “prophet” if everything he said came true. If he once said something that was proved inaccurate he was dismissed as a charlatan. That Daniel is called a prophet is proof that he had never been known to err. These prophecies set out in the Bible had a small portion which could be tested in the life of Daniel, but the rest was set in the future. The only other Biblical book to come close to Daniel in scope and content is Revelations.
The reason that I have chosen these two books is that they have terms of reference that are relatively easily recognised, and the language is not too obscure. The other Biblical prophets are difficult to pin down to a time framework simply because their terms of reference are applicable to several historical occurrences.
Before starting a study of these two books, it is necessary to look at a few assumptions that I have made, and why I have made them. Biblical students have made the common mistake of applying these prophecies to the global population. Now, while the entire globe will be affected, the prophecies concern the House of Israel only. Chapter 9:24. “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city,” Throughout the book of Daniel this theme is repeated: the prophecies are for “thy people and thy city”. This is undoubtedly meant for the house of Israel only. At one stage there is even a reference to the Ten Tribes on the one hand and the Two Tribes on the other. This of course refers to the separation between the Ten Tribes which are called Israel with their capital Samaria, and the Two Tribes which are called Judah, and their territory Judea.
Revelations constantly also refers to the twelve tribes. At one point the tribes are named. Even though there are anomalies in the list, it is clear that the prophecies are meant to cover the activities of this group within the global population. The rest of the world’s population are only involved insofar as the events described cannot take place in a vacuum. If we look for role players within the prophecies, we would be stupid to look beyond the house of Israel.
This in itself raises some important, and I think exciting questions. If these prophecies concern Israel and her kings, then who is Nebuchadnezzar? The king of Babylon, of course. But, why is he so important that a prophecy which spans two and a half thousand years of history is entrusted to him and not to God’s prophet, Daniel? In chapter 2 verse 37 Daniel says: “Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.” Obviously Nebuchadnezzar was a chosen one.
A study of the populations of that time, indicates that the Ten Tribes of Israel were taken into exile in Assyria roughly one hundred years before Daniel with the Two Tribes were taken into exile in Babylon. When looking at this distribution we find several interesting facts. None should be interpreted as casting doubt on the veracity of the Bible, but rather that the scribes condensed events to fit the available space.
At the time of the Flood the areas which today are Europe, Russia and Scandinavia were uninhabited. If we accept the Flood as a localised event or as a global disaster is immaterial. These areas were still uninhabited circa 2000 BC. The flood is tentatively set at a date around this time. Archaeologists assure us that circa 5000 BC much of Europe was permanently frozen, and would have been unpopulated, or at best sparsely populated.
From the creation of Adam until Shem the son of Noah, there are eleven generations. From Adam to the Flood is 1656 years. From the Flood to the birth of Jacob is another eleven generations, but only 452 years. This means that from the creation of Adam to the birth of Jacob we have 2108 years. I have pinpointed Jacob, because he changed his name to Israel, and as such we can limit our study to his lineage for this exercise.
From the birth of Jacob the establishment of dates becomes a little confusing. God made a promise to Abraham that his children would be servants in a foreign land, but that after four generations they would return to Canaan. Biblical scholars have for years been trying to get four generations to equal four hundred years. Without success, of course. Quite simply the children of Jacob (Israel) were in Egypt as servants for four hundred years, and then they provided the Pharaohs of Lower Egypt for four generations. These were known as the Hyksos (shepherd) Kings. This would equate to approximately five hundred years. Starting circa 2000 BC this brings us to 1500 BC.
The Jewish calendar has the creation of Adam corresponding with the year 3760 BC. This puts the birth of Jacob at 1652 BC. Taking a further five hundred years puts the Exodus at circa 1150 BC. This is a good fifty years after the date given for Joshua crossing the Jordan River. And can obviously not be correct. A more acceptable date for the birth of Jacob would be circa 2000 BC. This would put the Exodus circa 1500 BC. We now get the dates to fall in line with the accepted period of circa 1000 BC for Saul and David.
Archaeologists again tell us that the area to the north had undergone a climate change during the period after the Flood, resulting in large areas becoming desert, and cities being abandoned. A migration toward the south took place as the areas dried out. Once again this fits with the idea that the areas to the north and west were to all intents and purposes unpopulated.
The federation between the Ten and the Two Tribes was tenuous at best. The Ten, known to history as Israel, only agreed to a federation on condition that the king was not a Judean. This is probably because of the fact that Judah had taken two Moabite wives, and was accordingly accursed. The anointing of David while Saul was still alive brought about an immediate armed uprising on the part of Israel, because David was a Judean. On the death of Saul the federation lapsed, and was briefly re-instated during the reign of Solomon, but never again.
Three hundred years later the Assyrians under Sargon, followed by Sennacherib, took the Ten Tribes into exile. Indications are that from before the time of Solomon there was a migration of people including the Ten Tribes away from Canaan into the north and west, meaning Russia and Europe. Some sources indicate that a number migrated to India and possibly into China. Biblical sources indicate that the Ten disappeared from history after the exile. On the other hand Josephus wrote in 100 AD, in his history of the Jews, that the Ten were on the other side of the Euphrates, and were more than the sands of the sea.
In the fifth century BC, when Daniel was in Babylon, the area where the Ten came from was called Samaria, after the capital city of the Ten. Reference to Israel had fallen away, but surfaces, out of context, in Daniel’s writings, when he prays for God’s people Israel, as well as Judah! This means that he was well aware of the whereabouts of the Ten.
My contention is that the armies that overran Jerusalem under Nebuchadnezzar, were largely made up of soldiers from the Ten Tribes. They would have returned to their homes in Babylon, and their sons and grandsons would have provided the manpower for the Medes and the Persians who in turn conquered Babylon. Similarly they would have provided the armies for Alexander in his lightening conquest of the world. In the same manner the bulk of Rome’s fighting force were also from these Ten.
The history of the Two (Judah and Benjamin) is a little less glorious. After the order to return to Judea and rebuild the Temple and the City of Jerusalem, only a very small portion of the Jewish exiles opted to return under Ezra and Nehemia. For nearly a thousand years there was a significant Jewish population in and around Babylon.
Meanwhile there was considerable friction between the groups who returned from exile and those that had stayed behind. This is shown in the parable of the good Samaritan. Samaritans were the remnants of the Ten who were still in their homeland. The Judeans never forgave them for breaking the alliance after Saul. Samaritans were, therefore, seen as cowardly untouchables by the Judeans.
The history of the Jews takes another curious twist in 113 BC. John Hyrcanus I, the king of the Jews, defeated the Idumeans, (also Edomites) who were the offspring of Esau, Jacobs twin. Against the Mosaic law, he did not kill all the Idumeans, but incorporated them in the Jewish religion on the grounds that they were descendants of Abraham. Certain Jews believe that their race is cursed to this day for this act. John Hyrcanus II in 63 BC requested assistance from Pompei against his “brother”, Aristobulus, who also claimed the throne of Judea. Pompei complied and John Hyrcanus II held the throne as king of Judea. His successor was Herod Antipas, who is undeniably an Idumean! How did a defeated group supply a king two generations later without a war? I can only deduce that John Hyrcanus I and II were in fact Idumeans, and that Judea had lost the war in 113 BC.
From all this I conclude that the Judeans have become greatly bastardised since the exile to Babylon, and then again after the war with the Idumeans. The Ten would in all probability be less polluted by their migration. I must also mention in all this that several texts state that Judah is cursed because he married a Moabite woman.
We should note that the tribe of Levi disappeared from sight shortly after the Exodus. They were, however, stationed in Jerusalem to oversee the Temple and see to the religious well-being of the “Jews”. While I contend that few members of Judah and Benjamin can claim pure blood, the same is not true of the Levites. One need only think of the Cohens, Cohns, Kahns, amongst others who can trace their bloodline back to Aaron.
DANIEL 2: 31-45.
Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them; and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Foreasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
Daniel gives the interpretation of this dream himself. We do not have to guess. The head of gold is Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian Empire. The silver follows and represents another empire, this time the Medes and the Persians. The third is of brass and refers to the Greeks under Alexander. The fourth is the Roman Empire.
Up to this point there is not much argument. Protestant students have no problem identifying the Roman Catholic Church as the natural successor to the Roman Empire. Catholics on the other hand are less enthusiastic. An illuminating fact comes out of the Roman custom not to tax Macedonia, because that was the country of their origin. This adds weight to my idea that the ten tribes were the driving force in the migration westward into Europe. Another strange coincidence is the stele found in Athens stating that the city was founded on a particular date corresponding to 500 BC BY THE TEN TRIBES. Note that this is the city of Athens as opposed to the region referred to in all the histories, and myths of the Greek peoples.
The Roman Empire started crumbling in 313 AD when Constantine and Licinius agreed to divide the Empire in two: The western, or Roman Empire, and the Eastern or Byzantine Empire. Regardless of the history books these two were not united under Constantine. History would have us believe that the Empire was united for as much as a hundred years from this point. History also has Constantine winning the battle of Mulvian Bridge, which led to the unification. If Constantine was so successful, then why did he have to go to the trouble of building a new capital for Byzantium at Constantinople?
History trips itself up as well. We are taught that Constantine issued an edict, the Edict of Nantes, in which the Roman Catholic Church was declared the official church of Rome. In actual fact this was an edict signed between Constantine and Licinius entrenching freedom of religion. That is all religions, not just the Catholic faith. If this edict was as stated, then how do we explain the decree passed by the Roman Emperor, Justinius, in 533 AD which declared the Bishop of Rome to be the official head of all Christians in Rome. As if that is not enough, Emperor Phocas issued a decree in 606 AD in which the Bishop of Rome was declared the head of all Christians in Christendom! It is no wonder that this decree was ignored in Byzantium and in Russia. What happened to Constantine’s declaration that The Catholic Church was the official Church of Rome? The answer is clear: Constantine was the Roman Emperor of Byzantium, and not of Rome. The Church which he declared official was the Greek Orthodox Church!
Shortly after Phocas declared the Bishop of Rome as head of all Christians, The Bishop, now with the title Pope, made a deal with Dagobert, The Albigensian king of the Franks, which declared the Catholic Church the official Church of France. We should remember that France was virtually the whole of Europe at that stage. Again we can ask what happened to Constantine’s decree? This Agreement with Dagobert lifted the Roman Church from the smallest church in the world to the largest church instantly.
What happened in the interim three hundred years between Constantine and Phocas and Dagobert? Who were all the Popes that were created to fill the Gaps?
What really happened was that the Roman Emperors realising that they were losing ground, and that their empire was shrinking rapidly, entered into a deal with the Church of Rome, in which one of their family members would be elected as Pope of the new movement, in return for which the church would receive official sanction. Hiding behind the skirts of the Pope, the Roman Empire has spread its sphere of influence into areas which would have been impossible for the Emperors to do by conquest. In fact the post of Emperor became redundant. He was retrenched.
Here we have the official successor to the Roman Empire: The Holy Roman Empire.
We should not waste too much time and effort shouting the odds at history. What popular history tries to tell us was achieved by Constantine in 324 AD was achieved between Justinian, Phocas and the agreement with Dagobert between 606 AD and 650 AD. What is 300 years in the scheme of things anyway. It is worth noting that history up to Constantine is relatively transparent and easy to trace. The same cannot be said for the three hundred years that followed. We have clear historical records for Britain and Gaul (France) thanks to meticulous Roman Historians. The three hundred years that follow are not only murky, they can be downright muddy. It is this period which hides King Arthur and Camelot, and the host of knights that go with them. No one ever asks why we have perfect records for Britain and Europe up to Constantine, but confusing bunkum thereafter.
One example will suffice. History tells us that the Vandals were one of several barbaric groups from the east that attacked Rome. They were soundly beaten by a combined force of Roman soldiers and Goths. Note: THEY THEN TURNED ON ROME! They were so soundly beaten that they turned, and crossed the dreaded Alps, and attacked the capital city of Rome! Enter the superhero. Pope Leo I using his EXTREME influence, persuaded the Vandals not to attack and sack this lovely city. Somewhere around 353 AD Pope Leo died. As if on cue, the Vandals disappeared like smoke, never to be heard of again. The question remains where did Leo I come from, because there was no Catholic Church of Rome at that stage, and what was the real part played by the Vandals?
There is not much argument about the four Empires, other than the successor to the Roman Empire. Where argument arises is with the feet and toes of iron and clay mixed. Some scholars feel that these represent the United Nations, or some other man-made organisation. Some think that the ten toes represent the ten provinces of the Roman Empire. I cannot agree, because the UN is not part of the four Empires as set out by Daniel. Also Rome did at one stage have ten provinces, but they also had over a hundred at other times.
There are also scholars who think that the Iron and clay refers to the Protestant movement that is in conflict with Catholicism. This also does not stand up to scrutiny. The Anglican Church, or Church of England, is nothing but a Catholic Church with an English Archbishop. He does not even aspire to the Title of Pope (literally father). In the USA the largest “Christian” church is the Episcopalians. They are in fact only an American Catholic Church. I realise that this could get me on a hit list, but so be it.
Let us look at the protestant movement. The main instigators were people like Luther, Calvin and Zwingli. All good Jewish boys. Nobody questions how all three survived when there was only one punishment for heresy, and that was death. The Catholic Church murdered millions of people on a whim, but could not get around to swatting some upstarts who were guilty of many more heresies than any of the poor individuals they tortured and burnt.
Can this help us to identify the feet and toes of iron and clay? If we stick to the original idea that the prophecies concern the people of four Empires, then we can look only in them for a group that has its origin in these four collectively or individually. The clay should be noticeably different and yet part of the four.
Even today the aristocracy keeps to themselves, and marriages that involve non aristocrats as partners are frowned upon. The word “aristocracy” is also kept almost exclusively for European aristocracy. The Royal families are so inter-related that only an expert can unravel them. As a group they own almost the entire economy of the world. Should they withdraw from the economy, what is left would disappear in a puff of smoke. Here is the iron of the legs, feet and toes.
In 1717 AD the Freemasons had their “official launch” in four London pubs. This was in the dawn of the industrial revolution. The aristocracy, who up until then had total control by virtue of owning everything, recognised the threat, and moved swiftly to neutralise it. Through Freemasonry they identified the potential leaders among the proletariat. These were carefully nurtured and trained. Roughly two hundred years ago the system called democracy was introduced. In this system the man-in-the-street is fooled into believing that he has a say in government.
In this system the aristocracy sponsors a peasant (non-aristocrat) as a member of parliament. Once elected he can easily be controlled through the economic system. Here is the clay. While the King James (KJ) refers only to “clay” or “miry clay”, other translations refer to the “brittleness of clay”. The history of the past two hundred years of democracy is lined with MP’s who have resigned after being disgraced in some way or another. The same does not happen to the aristocrats. In Britain this system, known to us as “the Westminster system” consists of the “House of Commons” (elected officials) and the “House of Lords” (representatives of the aristocracy). The strength of the iron, and the brittleness of the clay can be seen clearly.
In considering the European Aristocracy we should never lose sight of the Pope. Much as the contrary may be argued, he is a family member. In years past there were sham wars between the families over which cardinal would be elected. In a show reminiscent of the United States presidential election, the candidates would jockey for position, and in some cases even murder was said to have been used to ensure the position went the right way. Just like the US elections it was a sham. A committee of family members had decided the successor, and all the showmanship actually was sleight of hand.
The ten toes would refer to an event set at the “end of time”, because it is in the period of the toes that the rock is “broken off without hands”, which destroys the entire statue. It is important to note that the destruction is in the reverse order to the prophecy. To look for this in history will probably not be very successful. I believe that it refers to the division of the world into ten “free trade areas”. The one everybody knows is the European Union. In South Africa we constantly hear of the SADC (or sadec) countries. This is a free trade area including the countries of Southern Africa. In total there are ten throughout the world. In each the Westminster idea of Democracy is promoted. Strangely enough even in the so-called communist countries they have a “democratic” system. It has become clear after the “collapse” of Russian communism that there are many billionaires in Russia, which should, theoretically, not be possible.
Although I do not place too much importance on such mathematical tricks, it is interesting to play one: assume the statue is in the proportions of a six foot man. The toes would be roughly one inch in length, which would correspond to one seventy second of the statue. This fraction of the two thousand five hundred years since Nebuchadnezzar would represent thirty six years. Seeing that the “Free Trade Areas” have been in existence for some time, I suggest that we cannot have much more than twenty years of the toe period left.
Is there any way in which we can confirm the aristocracy of Europe as the Iron of the statue? I have found a strange anomaly in this. According to Greek mythology Europa was the daughter of a Greek king, who went down to the beach to bathe. There she was spotted by Zeus, who seduced her in the shape of a beautiful bull. She climbed on his back, and he carried her to the island of Minos. On the way he impregnated her, and they started the dynasty of the Minoan kings.
What sort of a girl would be seduced by a bull rather than his true godly shape? Why was her name given to the sub-continent we know as Europe, when the Greek islands are not exactly seen as Europe? The answer lies in Revelations where the great harlot is described as being on a beast. She is also described as clothed in the sun with a halo of twelve stars around her head, and the moon at her feet. Catholicism contains large parts of sun worship. The use of inter alia Christmas, Sunday and Easter are examples. The flag of the European Union is a circle of twelve stars on a blue background. The Moon (I believe) refers to Islam, whose sign is the crescent moon. It cannot be co-incidental that the establishment of the Catholic Church by Phocas and Dagobert, occurred at exactly the same time as Mohamet established his religion in the Middle East.
Another twist is the question as to just when did the name “Europe” come into use for the continent? Up to the time of Dagobert the area now known as Europe was referred to as Gaul, or France. At times it was the “Land of the Franks”, or The Land of the Waldenses, or Lombards or such groups, but never as Europe. Just when and by whom was the name chosen? That it clearly describes that harlot of revelations is clear. An additional point is that the harlot is described as sitting on seven hills. Rome is the only city in Europe to be described this way, and she has undeniably controlled Europe for over two thousand years.
The next point concerns the “rock” which is broken off without hands. Most other translations refer to “human hands”. Some scholars think that this refers to Christianity, or even to the “second coming of the Messiah”. I cannot go along with either of these, because all religions are as a result of “human hands”, and the destruction prophesied does not go with the idea of a millennium of peace, which is linked to the Second Coming. It is, of course, entirely possible that an event such as the second coming, or what some Christians call the Rapture, could happen parallel to the “rock”.
Most scholars point out that a mountain or possibly a rock in prophecy indicates a government. Daniel definitely indicates that “in the time of these kings” God will establish a kingdom that will last forever. The “time of these kings” clearly means the kings that rule in the time of the iron and clay mixture. If I am correct that the mixture of iron and clay refers to the democratic system which combines the strength of the financial giants, while allowing the man in the street to think that he is part of the government, then God is busy setting this everlasting government in place right now.
It is immediately after discussing the feet and toes of iron and clay the Daniel talks about the everlasting government, then immediately goes on to the Rock that destroys the government system that has been built up since the time of Babylon. My feeling is that this rock refers to an asteroid that will collide with the earth. This is confirmed in Revelations where four impacts are listed. Either the “Rock” will destroy life as we know it, or people who survive will unite and form a government “under God”. A true Theocracy. Only a catastrophe of such huge proportions could result in man uniting to such an extent.
The nagging question that remains is: what is meant by the description of the rock growing until it covers the whole earth? Some scholars think it is the Christian religion. This cannot be, as it occurs at the end of time, whereas the Christian faith has its origin two thousand years ago. Scientifically minded scholars are inclined to consider a reference to a nuclear winter following a holocaust. The same effect would be experienced following a major impact of an asteroid. The earth would be covered entirely by a cloud of smoke, gas, dust and water vapour. This will in all likelihood wipe out all life, and I do not believe that that is God’s plan.
Whatever this means, we can only guess. As the future unfolds, and more information becomes available, we may be able to hazard a more accurate idea. Until then we can only pray.
Daniel 3, 4, 5 and 6. These chapters contain the accounts of Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego, Daniel in the lions den, Nebuchadnezzars prophetic dream regarding his madness, and the Moving Finger writing on the wall. They do not contain prophetic material which can at this stage be connected to the present times.
DANIEL 7 contains the prophecy of the four beasts that come out of the sea. In prophecy beasts usually refer to empires, and the sea usually refers to the general population. Again I caution that I cannot agree that the entire global population is meant by this, but only the population of the areas discussed.
I feel that so much information is given here that the prophecy is best analysed section by section. The advantages outweigh the problem of following the theme.
This prophecy can be accepted as an expansion on the prophecy of the statue of Nebuchadnezzar.
DANIEL 7: 1-2.
In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.
To clarify the situation Daniel gives the period in which he received the vision. He then says that he saw the four winds of heaven blowing on the sea. His reference to the sea as “great” stems from the fact that he is referring to the population of the habitable world as it was known at that time. i.e. the areas stretching from Egypt, through Arabia and Assyria and west as far as Europe. Today this is not considered much, but in 500 BC this was the “known world”. The various translations at my disposal show a fine difference in meaning. Whereas the King James (KJ) and the translations based on it, have the Idea of the four winds blowing on the sea, a new translation by a group calling themselves the Daughters of Zion, provides an interesting concept. The four winds are translated as the “four spirits of heaven”, and the sea is indicated as being in upheaval. This leaves the idea that it is within the overall Plan of God for the population concerned.
DANIEL 1: 3-4.
And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.
There were four beasts, empires, that came out of the sea (population). They were different from each other, meaning that they can be linked to different countries within the area, and that they would have different characteristics. The famous winged lion found in the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon is a clear indication that we are being informed about Babylon. Now we can see that this prophecy is providing additional information on each empire.
The wings are ripped off, and the lion is made to stand upright. Babylon conquered a large territory, but then Nebuchadnezzar stopped his campaign, and settled in Babylon to rule his empire. According to the Bible he was considered a just and fair king. The lion stood up and was given the heart of a man. The ’83 Afrikaans translation prefers “the mind of a man” to the heart. Kings in those days were usually cruel despots who ruled by might. “Off with their heads” was usually the simplest and quickest solution to any problem.
Nebuchadnezzar was wise and cared for his people. This is indicated by the fact that he did not kill the leaders of the nations that he overpowered, but rather took them into exile into his own country and city. This minimised revolts, and the addition of the brainpower to his country gave a boost to his economy.
The Daughters of Zion translation (known as “Die Boek van Herinnering” or BvH) Again adds an interesting slant. All the other translations use a masculine form of address for the four beasts, the KJ prefers the neutral “it”, but the BvH uses the feminine approach. This is most enlightening, because the feminine form in prophecy usually indicates religion. This linking to a religion will become very important toward the end of this prophecy. Consider this: the Bible is a religious instruction book, should we not expect the prophecies within it to be linked to religion as well?
It is interesting to note that after his bout of madness, Nebuchadnezzar sent out a proclamation stating that the God of Daniel was the true God. He did not go as far as saying that all other religions were false, but indicated that no-one was permitted to mock Daniel’s God.
Looking at the main religions of the world, I find only one that has its origins in Babylon, and that is Judaism. Again that is enough to get me killed. None of the scriptures was known in written form prior to the exile. Even Rabbinical scholars agree that much of the Pentateuch (five books attributed to Moses) were written in Babylon. There is said to be a portion of Deuteronomy that was found by the priests “lost in the dust”, which scholars feel can safely be dated to 620 BC, or shortly before the exile to Babylon. There does seem to be some agreement among scholars that much of the Judaic teaching is paralleled by Babylonian and Chaldean texts.
Let us examine the rest of this prophecy before the shooting starts.
And behold another beast, a second, like a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.
This beast refers to the empire of the Medes and the Persians. They conquered Babylon circa 539 BC, under the leadership of Darius and Cyrus. To once again illustrate that these empires and nations are interlinked, Cyrus is referred to in scripture as the “anointed of God”. A non-Israelite? Unlikely. It was Cyrus that issued the decree allowing Ezra and Nehemia to return to build the Temple and Jerusalem.
Scholars are inclined to agree that “raised up on one side”, is reference to the alliance between the Medes and the Persians, in which the Persians were greater than the Medes. The three ribs in the mouth has most stumped unfortunately. They seem to think that it has to do with three provinces or districts of this empire. Still thinking religion, I am inclined to link the three ribs (Adam’s rib to create Eve) can be linked to the concept of the trinity. It is in this period that the idea of Father, son and Holy Spirit has its origin. True, Egypt had Ra, Isis and Osiris, which could be construed as a trinity, but they were only three among many. The Greeks and Romans had many gods and goddesses, but the idea of a male-female-child relationship can be traced to the Persian rootrace. Some scholars even link the Oriental idea of body, soul and spirit to the Mesopotamian influence from the time of Abraham.
Continuing the thought of female gender to the beasts, which would mean religion, we can link the Medes and Persians to the Russian Orthodox Church. I can here the derision. Remember, that there is a religious group called the Parsees (Persians), who had a teaching that is close to the Christian doctrine. It is also this group which gave rise to modern occult groups. People like Madame Blavatsky and Gurdieff, can be traced to Russian/Armenian roots. Even today there are a million adherents to the belief in Zoroaster, who live mainly in the area known as Kurdistan. Zoroaster was said to have started this religion about 500 BC. Note the correspondence to the date of the exile. In addition the natural tendency is to link the bear with Russia.
The reference to eating much flesh is indistinct. Apart from half-hearted attempts to link this to the meat offerings in the Temple, nobody seems prepared to venture an opinion on this. One thought is toward the many martyrs killed by the Church as a whole in establishing its doctrine. In fact the Catholic Church is estimated to have slaughtered 55 million people in their mad zeal to gain converts. That would be enough meat for any bear.
The importance of looking for the religion behind each beast is clear from the control that each church has over the various regions. The Russian Church has remained a formidable institution through nearly eighty years of communist rule. We should also remember that the occult directions to come out of Russia have led directly to the establishment of the New Age Movement.
Once again we can see the expansion on the empire described in the prophecy of the statue.
After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
As with the previous two beasts we are given additional information on the Greeks. The leopard is thought to indicate the speed with which Alexander conquered the known world. Naturally, I maintain that it was because the nucleus of his fighting force was of the Ten Tribes, who had an intimate knowledge of the foe and the protective battlements.
Most scholars think that the four wings indicate the speed of his conquest. On the other hand I think that this indicates his four able generals who gave the necessary information and guidance. The four heads is definitely a reference to the four generals who divided the empire among themselves after Alexander’s death. Dominion was certainly given to Alexander and then again to his four henchmen.
The female connotation leads to the natural choice of the Greek Orthodox Church. An interesting twist on the dominion given to the beast would be my theory that Constantine made this church the official church of Byzantium. Few would deny that there is little correspondence between the original teaching of Jesus the Nazarene and that of the Greek Church. One example will suffice. Three years after burial the body is exhumed, and the remains placed in a small coffin which is again blessed by the priest, and reburied, at a price, of course.
After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn. Before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and behold in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things. I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgement was set, and the books were opened. I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
As with the statue we are given much more information on this fourth empire. We will also recognise the broader detail given in this prophecy.
This is again undoubtedly the Roman Empire. In both prophecies iron is used to describe it. Who can question the iron rule of Rome? Which literally crushed all opposition. The natural successor, the Roman Church, is also adequately described as iron that crushes, and stamps the residue, and rules supreme, and does not allow opposition to the Papal authority. The Vatican is not too pleased at the connection, however. The feminine connection again supports the idea of the link to religion.
As noted before, there are scholars who maintain that the ten horns refer to ten provinces of Rome that I cannot go along with. In fact the proposal that the ten horns, like the ten toes, are the ten Free Trade Areas receives support from the prophecy stating that another small horn comes out from the ten, and three fall before it. The African Union has just been officially launched. This will require that the three FTA’s in Africa must be disbanded.
This little horn is given eyes and a mouth to say great things. Some translations prefer “a mouth which utters grandiose things”. In other words an egotist, or one who aspires to heights which he has no claim to. I believe that this is a reference to Ghaddafi. In most translations the little horn is described as different from the other ten. The ’83 Afrikaans translation has the small horn the same as the ten, but the three that are uprooted are different.
With Ghaddafi in mind, think of the actions of this “brother leader”. He has defied the United Nations; he has thumbed his nose at the USA, to the extent of declaring a holy war; more recently he came out in support of the man we all love to hate, Mugabe. In this speech he declared that colonialism was defeated, and that any Europeans wishing to stay in Africa, should be prepared to stay as servants, or leave immediately. At the inauguration of the African Union in Durban he issued an impromptu speech declaring that while Mugabe and Mbeki owed an apology to whites, whites should realise that they had no rights in Africa. Grandiose, indeed.
The connection with Islam should not be overlooked. Ghaddafi is, after all, first and foremost a Muslim. What is good for the religion is good for Ghaddafi. Islam is also moving toward their religious climax as prophesied in the Q’uran. Part of that prophecy involves world supremacy, and this is priority number one. Ghaddafi is playing a political game to take over chairmanship of the new African Union. He has been quoted as saying that Mbeki is unlikely to remain chairman for long. Consider the inordinate amount of time Mbeki spent in Libya prior to the launch of the AU, and wonder what is brewing.
The twenty four thrones described as “cast down” in KJ, are described in the New World Translation (NWT) as “there were thrones placed”; in the BvH as “set in place”. Strictly there is no real difference, but the KJ leaves us with the idea that the thrones were hurled out from somewhere, which is not the intention. The Ancient of days is translated in the ’83 Afrikaans translation as “He who lives forever”. There is also a fine difference between KJ “the Ancient of Days”, and the ’33 Afrikaans translation “an Ancient of days”. There is much speculation as to the identity of this entity. Some think that it is Jesus, while others think it refers to God. I think both these are incorrect, and that it probably refers to one of the archangels. Firstly because of the Old Testament belief that no-one could see God’s face and survive, and secondly, the description does not fit the image of Jesus. Points like: Ancient of days, when Jesus ascended as a relatively young man, and also “hair like pure wool” does not seem to me to be Jesus.
The reason that most scholars see Jesus in this prophecy is the description of one who has great numbers serving him, and he is given dominion, and rules forever. That may very well be, but at the moment, I will leave the point open.
The fourth beast is killed, and burnt in the fire. This beast has been identified as the Catholic Church. We should remember that “Catholic” means: universal, and the earlier indication that most Christian movements fall into this group is re-enforced. The Irish Monk, Mallachi, circa 1100 AD ended his list of Popes to come with the comment that in the time of the last pope Rome would be destroyed by fire. Nostradamus also described a rain of fire which would destroy Rome.
On the destruction of this fourth beast it is worth noting that KJ states: “…because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake”. The NWT puts it: “… Because of the sound of the grandiose words that the horn was speaking…”. The ’83 AT (Afrikaans) has: “…because of the proud (self-important, bragging) talk…”, this translation also adds an aspect that “one of the beasts was killed without indicating which one. Taken as a whole it is clear that what, and how, this “horn” speaks, causes the beast to fall. Again the utterances of Ghaddafi put him right in line for this position. Apart from the delusions of grandeur, he is a Muslim, and this combination could start the next war.
Now, for the interesting point: The other three beasts have their power taken away from them, but their lives are lengthened by a “time”. How could the Babylonian Empire still be alive, or the Medes and the Persians, or Greeks for that matter? Daniel clearly indicates that these beasts represent kingdoms. The key is given by the feminine address given in the BvH. As mentioned this gives a religious flavour to the empires. Again we can see the Jewish faith, the Russian Orthodox and the Greek Orthodox. Clearly these religions will not be affected if Rome and the Papacy are destroyed. This prophecy tells clearly that the Catholic faith is due for a major disruption while the other three will have their powers reduced but be allowed to continue operating. The latest moves toward the New Age of religious tolerance seems to be leading toward this situation. No church or creed will be allowed to set the tone for government, or control of the masses in the way that we have seen in the past.
Before I leave this prophecy I must stress that the Muslims are very much involved in the affairs of the world in the near future. The war all Christians are expecting with a brown, or yellow, race, clearly has a bearing on Islam. Here I feel it necessary to add as an aside, the prophecy from the Q’uran linked to the “end times”.
According to the Q’ran there will be a month in which there will be both a solar and a lunar eclipse. This is an extremely rare event. Because of the angle of the earth’s equatorial plane to the orbital plane it requires a very special set of circumstances in order to have both types of eclipse within a four week period. There is also a belief that I have not been able to confirm that the eclipses should be visible in the Middle East. Many years ago the year 2004 AD was identified as the year in which such two eclipses would occur. In this year, the prophecy says, the Imam Mehdi and the Messiah will make their appearance. They are already alive and well, doing whatever they are doing, wherever they are, waiting for the right time.
Islam is now set a serious problem: the prophecy states that the two entities are coming to bring peace to a war-torn Earth. Islam is set the God-given task of ensuring a war of global proportions before 2004, in order to set the stage for the appearance of the Imam and the Messiah. Clearly we have the case: no war, no Imam or Messiah. Islam cannot take a chance that the date has been wrongly identified, with the result that they are planning the war anyway. We should not that the month and year referred to is a month and year according to the Muslim calendar. We should not stare blindly at our Gregorian January to December calendar. The importance of Islam as a role player cannot be over emphasized. The little horn is different from the others, it brings about the downfall of the Roman (Catholic) beast.
This other player in this scene is the Catholic/Anglican/Episcopalian Churches, representing a host of other Christian denominations. If I read correctly, then we can expect a major war involving Islam and Christianity (in the eyes of Islam this is the Holy War that they have been expecting). One may ask: but what of the group that has not been mentioned, the Jews and Israel? Firstly, the Christian groups mentioned constitute the bulk of the Ten Tribes of Israel!
The Jews, as I have shown, are in fact not Jews, but Edomites. They are related to the Arabs more so than to the Ten Tribes. The true Jews, who make up our Global Elite such as the European aristocracy, are the real planners in all this. They can be expected to stay safely out of harms way, condemning the various parties as inhuman, and followers of barbaric religions that allow such atrocities. In this war two of Judah’s major foes will be all but destroyed: the heretical Christian Ten Tribes, and the bastardised Idumean/Jewish group together with the historical foe: the Arab (Filistine). The great insult of the Romans renaming of Judea to Palestine (Filistine), and the banning of Jews from Jerusalem will finally be avenged.
From this we can understand references in Daniel and revelations that indicate that Judea (Israel) and Jerusalem will be destroyed. The reference in Revelations that only one hundred and forty four thousand will be saved is one such reference. Another is the great earthquake that will split the mount of olives at the “second coming”. We know the destructive power of such an earthquake. Not much of Israel is likely to survive such a cataclysm. Ever since the Exile to Babylon the real Jew has not shown much interest in the Holy Land, except as a tool for making prophecy become reality. They never returned to Judea, and as such are relatively pure-blooded.
On this point we can briefly remember some points from the Gospels: The enmity between the Judean (Edomite/Idumean) and the Samaritan, which Jesus apparently did not share; Jesus referred to the Farisees as children of the viper or adder; the animosity between James and Paul over Paul’s teachings. Historically, the Essenes refused to set foot in the Temple, because they did not recognise the priesthood or the rites performed. James, the brother of Jesus confronted the priests in the Temple on these points. He was thrown from the highest part of the Temple wall for his troubles, and his death started the Jewish revolt that freed Judea from Roman rule for nearly five years.
I do not doubt that the entire world’s populations will be drawn into such a war, but the actual conflict will be between these groups.
DANIEL 7: 16-27.
I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; Until the Ancient of days came, and judgement was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and a dividing of time. But the judgement shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
The angel confirms that the four beasts are four kings, or kingdoms, that come out of the population. He adds that the saints of the most High will take the last kingdom from the fourth king, and possess it for ever. The ’83 Afrik. T. translates saints as “those that belong to God”. The BvH (Israel vision) refers to “those that are apart).
The little horn has information added that he is “stouter” than the other. “Stouter” is translated as “bigger” in the NWT, BvH and the ’33 AT. This horn then makes war on the saints and wins. The “Ancient of days” arrives and passes judgement in favour of the saints, who take over the kingdom when the time comes for them to possess the kingdom.
The angel also confirms that the fourth kingdom will be different from the first three kingdoms. This is clearly the Roman/Catholic Empire. All the others are despotic rulers, who rule by might. The fourth beast is not like that. He changes from despotic rule to democratic rule to religious rule, while the true control remains unchanged. By spreading the religious doctrine throughout the world they control a much greater portion of the earth (not just the Middle East and Europe), than any national leader could ever hope to do.
The angel confirms that the beast will devour the earth. We possibly have an indication of this devouring in the millions who died in the years of the Inquisition. The innocent Incas of South and Central America were also slaughtered on an unbelievable scale simply because they would not drop their ancient religions, and become Christians immediately.
The angel confirms that the ten horns are ten kings. There is a question that will probably never be resolved regarding these horns. The wording in the translations at my disposal is not clear if the ten kings rule simultaneously, or if they ruled consecutively. The statement that the little horn strikes down three of the ten indicates to me that the ten rule side by side as the ten FTA’s.
Out of the ten comes another, and three disappear from the scene. Most translations agree that the three are “cast down” or subdued, I think the meaning can be seen as being closer to the little horn replacing the three, although the use of force seems to be indicated. That there is a difference between this little horn and the other ten is again pointed out. Again we hear that the little horn will utter great things, and will “wear out the saints”. He is in control.
The little horn then is described as one who will attempt to change time and law. Islam follows a different calendar to the rest of the world, counting their years from the time that Mohamet started the Hegira, in 622 AD. Most of the “civilised” world uses a system of law that is based on the Roman Dutch laws. Islam, on the other hand, has Sharia law. This is the law that requires a thief to have his hand amputated on conviction. We can expect Islam to introduce their calendar and system of laws. Daniel is clear: the little horn will attempt to change times and laws.
Here we find another confusing text: they will be given into his hand for a time and times and the dividing of a time, or three and a half years. My English teacher would have called out in glee: “who is the mysterious ‘they’?” Is the reference to the saints being given into his hand or is it the “times and laws” that are indicated? Whichever it is, we can expect a difficult three and a half years. The ’83 AT uses the term “for the allotted time”.
The angel tells Daniel that the saints of God will be given the empire of the Beast to rule forever. This empire will then be an everlasting Kingdom. For the saints taking over the kingdom and destroying the forth beast, the NWT uses: annihilate completely and destroy him totally. I do not expect much to be left of the Roman Catholic Church and the aristocracy of Europe.
The approach that the prophecies are only applicable to the populations of the Middle East and Europe is supported here. Islam has its origin in the Middle East. Islam is, however, different in that its power base spans all the other territories. Islam is a purely religion based government system in which members do not have to be citizens of one country to support the leader of another. A Muslim may never have been to Palestine, yet he will support Arafat simply because he too is a Muslim.
Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. I saw the ram pushing westward and northward and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will and became great. As I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the west of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran into him in the fury of his power. And I saw him close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. Therefore the goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised and prospered. Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? And he said unto me, unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
Daniel receives this vision in the reign of Belashazzar, or toward the end of the Babylonian Empire. The vision has no bearing on Babylon, and is meant to indicate the Empires of the Medes and Persians and of the Greeks. In 539 BC the Persians captured Babylon. Shortly afterward Cyrus issued the decree that allowed Ezra to return and build the Temple. As with the previous visions further information is given regarding the Empires to come.
The ram with two horns is generally accepted as being a sheep ram. This is the Empire of the Medes and Persians. The two horns indicates the duality of this Empire. The one horn is taller than the other, which is confirmed by the Persians being greater than the Medes, notwithstanding their later establishment. This ram is described as pushing westward (toward Greece and Rome), northward (toward Turkey and Syria) and southward (toward Egypt). No one could stand against this Empire, and they did whatever they pleased.
The he goat indicates Alexander and the Greeks. In 332 BC Alexander conquered the Medes and Persians. He died in 323 BC at the height of his power. The goat is significant. Legend states that the Greeks were looking for a place to settle and establish their home. They were told by and oracle to follow the goats. In their travels they came upon a flock of goats and followed them, until they reached an area where they settled down. Alexander’s emblem was a goat, and the goat features to this day as a symbol of Greece. This fits my theory that the Ten tribes were migrating gradually westward.
Alexander’s death was no accident, because his entire family died with him. There was, therefore, no resistance when the four generals divided the Empire between them. This was symbolised by the four horns coming up in the place of the one. The four were: Cassander, who took Thrace and Macedonia; Lysimachus, who took the northern kingdom spanning most of what became Byzantium; Seleucus, who took the eastern part Syria and most of the Middle East; and Ptolemy, who took the southern kingdom comprising Egypt and certain surrounding territories. As prophesied the four winds of heaven.
The most important part of this prophecy now follows. A little horn now comes out of one of these horns. A new empire is born out of one of these kingdoms. This could be confusing because Seleucus soon took over the kingdoms of Cassander and Lysimachus, creating a northern kingdom. Similarly Ptolemy took over strings of coastal islands and established a powerful southern kindom. Either of these could fit the bill for the new Empire. They were, however, soon to be overshadowed by Rome, and there can be no doubt that the prophecy is referring to Rome.
In 509 BC the Republic of Rome was founded. The correlation to the exile to Babylon should not be missed. This was a small and unimportant republic, not even worth mentioning in the company of Babylon, The Medes and the Persians, or Greece, nor for that matter in the company of the four generals. Nevertheless by 262 BC they had grown to the extent that they controlled the whole of the Italian peninsula, and commenced to make war on Carthage – remember Hannibal and his elephants?
262 BC is the date that the Romans became a player in the world theatre. A point missed by many is that the Romans never taxed Macedonia. This was simply because they considered Macedonia as there home country! Alexander was a Macedonian. They were kith and kin to Alexander’s gang! Here we have a little horn coming from one of the four horns. This horn grew and became mighty. The two kingdoms of Seleucus and Ptolemy cannot compare.
Once again Daniel is expanding on his previous prophecies. The little horn, the Romans, exists parallel to the four horns, the four kingdoms for a time. We cannot, therefore, look for an Empire that comes about as a result of, or out of the fall of these four. Rome finally took over the entire Greek Empire when Egypt fell when Octavian defeated Mark Anthony in 31 BC. The date for the small horn to emerge is therefore between Alexander’s death in 323 BC and around 31 BC. 262 BC fits comfortably.
Once again Daniel puts the most emphasis on this Empire. Each prophecy makes the Empires a little easier to see and understand.
The city of Rome was established in 753 BC. The Republic of Rome was established in 509 BC. Strangely these two dates correspond uncannily to the exile of the Ten Tribes to Assyria, and the exile of Judah to Babylon.
This horn becomes great “even to the hosts of heaven”. “Host” always seems to refer to military bodies: armies, or fighting forces. This empire will be great even in more than global terms. It will cast down some of the stars. The NWT has it: “… it caused some of the army and some of the stars to fall to earth,” The ’33 AT has: “… it became great right up to the army of heaven, and caused some of the army, namely some of the stars, to fall to the earth…” The ’83 AT puts it: “He became so mighty that he even attacked the heavenly army, and threw some of them, the stars, to the ground…” This reference to the heavenly army can only refer to a religious conflict. We may get a clue from the “stars” that were cast down. Strong’s concordance explains the word translated as stars, as specifically used in connection with the Messiah, or his brothers or family. Now, what do we have? This Empire will cast down the Messiah or his close family?
Let us examine the text differently. The Catholic Church reached such an influential peak that they decided that Jesus was in fact God. They also gave the Pope the title Emmanuel, God on earth! The Vatican council declared that the word of the Pope was the unchallengeable law as if God had given it! They introduced Mary into a trinity of father, mother and son. They took Jesus and put Him on the walls of every Catholic church as a crucified man. Surely we are allowed to interpret this as casting down some of the stars. The Romans were in power and involved in the crucifixion and the deaths of all the apostles, including the brothers of Jesus.
Verse 11 states that he even magnifies himself to the prince of the host. This fits with the previous paragraph. The following text reads “…and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down.” This requires close study. The NWT translates: “And all the way to the Prince of the army it put on great airs, and from him the constant [feature] was taken away, and the established place of his sanctuary was thrown down. The ’33 AT says “…so that the continuous offering was refused to Him and his holy house was cast down.” The ’83 AT puts it: “He even attacked the Head of that Army by forbidding the daily offer to Him and breaking down his holy house”.
The sum of this is clearly that the leader of this empire will refuse to allow offerings to God, and that the Temple will be destroyed. Antiochus IV was a Seleucian heir who was sent to Rome as a guarantee of non aggression. As a Roman general he attacked Jerusalem and offered a pig to Zeus in the Temple. This effectively put an end to any sacrifice, because the Temple had been defiled. In 161 BC the Temple was again declared sanctified and sacrifices were again commenced. We should note that the Essenes, who had their origin at this time refused to accept the sanctification of the Temple or the rites as administered by the priests. Right up to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD they refused to accept or take part in any rite in the Temple. If we accept Antiochus’ pig on the altar as the end of sacrifices or the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD by Titus as the last, the Romans were responsible each time. They did in fact stop the daily sacrifice. In 135 AD Jerusalem was destroyed and renamed, and Jews were banned from living in the city.
Regardless of which event is seen as the trigger, or if the destruction of the Temple or of Jerusalem is seen as the destruction of His sanctuary, the Romans were involved all the way. In all the translations at my disposal, I am fascinated by the use of capital letters in this text. Some of the nouns and pronouns used to indicate God are in capitals, while others are not. Either this error is common to all translators or we are being misled as to the exact meaning of the text. I do not have the answer.
Verse 12 continues on the subject of the daily sacrifice. KJ: “And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised and prospered.” NWT: “And an army itself was gradually given over, together with the constant [feature], because of transgression; and it kept throwing truth to the earth, and it acted and had success”. ’33 AT: “And an army is surrendered to the horn in wickedness (godforsaken) together with the continuous sacrifice; and it cast down the truth to the ground and was successful in his actions”. ’83 AT: “A sinful worship replaced the daily sacrifice, and the true religion was trampled. This horn was successful in everything he did”. BvH: “And he handed over an army against the continuing, through an uprising; and he cast the Truth to the ground and had success in his actions”.
How any Bible student can be expected to study from such divergent translations is beyond me. Nevertheless, we can see certain events in this text: a host, or army, is surrendered or given up to the Roman Empire/Roman Catholic Church, the daily sacrifice is forbidden and the Temple and/or Jerusalem is destroyed. The Catholic Church has also prospered in whatever it did. This seems to be an accurate prophecy to say the least, regardless of the confusing language that it is couched in. It also shows how several translations can be used to understand an otherwise “Greek” text.
It remains to examine the period given for the duration of this prophecy. The question is asked: How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden underfoot? Again it is necessary to examine other translations in an attempt to unravel the mystery. NWT: “How long will the vision be of the Constant [feature] and of the transgression causing desolation, to make both [the] holy place and [the] army things to trample on?” ’33 AT: “How long will the vision last – of the continuing sacrifice and the extreme wickedness – will the holy place as well as the army be surrendered to be trampled upon.” ’83 AT: “How long will the things of the vision continue, the thing of the daily sacrifice, the terrifying sin, the surrender of the holy place, and the trampling of the heavenly army?
Verse 14 provides a clue: “And he said unto me, Unto two thousand three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”
This part of the prophecy deals with the little horn that comes out of one of the four, and grows great. This means the Roman Empire/Holy Roman Empire. It is unlikely to refer to the establishment of either the city of Rome or the Republic of Rome, as these were prior to the vision. It could refer to the point at which the little horn emerges after the four horns have taken over. It could refer to Antiochus sacrificing the pig in the temple circa 165 BC, rendering the Temple unclean. It could also refer to the Crucifixion and destruction of the Temple in 70 AD and of Jerusalem in 135 AD.
After Ezra and Nehemia returned to rebuild the Temple and the city, there was a continuing battle between the returnees and those who had not gone into exile. The second group refused to accept the authority of Ezra and Nehemia, and even tried to physically prevent them from carrying out their task. There is some support for this group in that one source refers to Ezra and Nehemia having to get the assistance of Artaxerxes to enforce the laws of the Persians on those in Judea and Israel. This would mean that there might not have been a legal sacrifice on the Temple Mount since before the exile.
What if the prophecy is not about the daily sacrifice at all? Reference to Strong’s on the word translated as “daily sacrifice” or as “continuing sacrifice” or “constant [feature}”, yields only one word: continuing. Transgression, according to Strong’s would usually be transgression against God, or something of that nature. Desolation yields “appalling”, or deflower, with desolation only being one of many meanings. This text could well read: “How long will the appalling transgression against God continue, resulting in the suppression of the holy place (faith) and the army (people of God).
Whatever is correct, the most likely starting date would be the emergence of the Roman Empire as a world player in 262 BC, when they took over the entire Italian Peninsula and made war on Carthage. Rome has been in the ascendance ever since.
Two thousand three hundred days: one prophetic day is one year of three hundred and sixty days. Reducing this to years of 365,25 days gives us 2267 years give or take a few months. With the starting point of 262 BC we now get 2005 AD. From verse 14 this would be the year in which the sanctuary will be cleansed. If we see this as the “holy place” or as the “religion”, the result is the same. In all probability this is the year in which the Temple will be rebuilt, and possibly the restart of religious sacrifices.
And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
The indignation would be the trampling of the holy place and the army. Daniel is given a very clear indication that the appointed time is fixed and cannot be changed. All the ghuru’s who preach that good thoughts can change the future should take note of this prophecy. The end shall be.
DANIEL 8: 20-
The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision: for it shall be for many days.
The angel confirms the meaning of the ram as the Medes and the Persians, and the goat as the Greeks. Alexander is clearly recognisable. Then the angel gives a new twist to the prophecy: he includes the Roman Empire/Holy Roman Empire with the Greeks. Considering My approach that they are all of the Ten Tribes, I do not find this surprising. In the previous prophecies Daniels visions have all separated the Romans from the Greeks. Here the little horn grows out of one of the four kingdoms within Alexander’s Empire. Repeating the fact that the Romans regarded Macedonia as their original home, or source, makes this totally clear.
In another confusing move the angel goes straight from the four kingdoms of Greece to the end times. “And in the latter part of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full…” NWT: “And in the final part of their kingdom, as the transgressors act to completion.” ’33 AT: “But at the end of their reign, when the wicked have filled the measure,” ’83 AT: “Toward the end of their reign, when sin has rich its peak (height). BvH: “But at the end of their reign, when the rebels have filled their measure.”
Clearly the angel is not referring to the end of the Greek Empire in 31 BC when Octavian defeated Mark Anthony, but to a time much further into the future. Trying to decipher Strong’s concordance is like trying to decipher morse code without the code. One can, however, gain some insight as to the original meaning. For instance “transgressors” in Strong’s is equated to rebels. A view that is supported by the BvH. This is of cardinal importance, simply because anyone can be a transgressor, but only a citizen of a particular country can be a rebel in that country. This means that the transgressors are Israelites rebelling against God. Rebels cannot be rebels against a foreign country.
Strong’s also adds information to the “full” or “filled their measure”. Here the idea of completion is added as given in the NWT. We can now read: When the rebels have shot their bolt. The upshot of this argument is that the time being identified is way beyond the end of the Greek Empire, and can correctly be placed at “the end times”.
Ending verse 23: “…a king with fierce countenance , and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.” The same exercise with Strong’s and the other translations yields: “…a fierce, hard, heartless, sly, unmerciful king who understands dark sentences, ambiguous sayings, underhand dealings, riddles. In my opinion this will cover most of the aristocracy throughout history.
The move by the angel to go from the four kingdoms that came out of Alexander’s Empire, straight to the “end” sticks in my mind. Why? In other prophecies the visions are clear and consequent. A period of over two thousand three hundred years separates us from the four kingdoms.
The thought just will not go away that here the angel may be describing a title as opposed to a person. If so, then any royal dynasty could qualify. Even the Papacy should be considered. Regardless of the millions of people who believe that the Pope is the re-incarnation of God, many popes have more than lived up, or is that down, to this description.
The Papacy has existed for just short of fourteen hundred years, and in that time the popes have been guilty of every kind of underhand dealing, and every atrocity one can think of. I do not deny that good things have come out of Papacy, but no one can deny that much to be ashamed of has also happened.
Note that this is only a thought, as this “king” has not been identified with certainty by anyone. He may in fact be in the future.
Verse 24 and 25: And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall stand up against the Prince of princes; and he shall be broken without hand.
This description fits the papacy (seen as a tool and front for the aristocracy) with uncanny accuracy. His power certainly is mighty (Strong’s: many, countless”. Certainly not by his own power. The present pope is so frail he can hardly stand. Powerful he is not, but his position and title make him the most powerful man on earth. He shall destroy wonderfully (extraordinary, marvellous). Think of the estimate of 55 million killed in the inquisition. The Vatican certainly has prospered. He shall destroy the mighty (countless) and the holy people. (saints, nation of holy people). Through his policy (insight, cunning) he will cause craft (deceit, treachery) to prosper. He shall magnify (promote) himself. By peace (quietness, ease, prosperity) he shall destroy many. He shall stand against the Prince of princes.
He shall be broken without hand. This takes us right back to the statue of Nebuchadnezzar. A rock shall be broken off without hands and will destroy the statue entirely. All four Empires will be destroyed in this calamity. This would tend to indicate that the empires and religions that have stemmed out of Israel will be destroyed like dust from the threshing floor.
DANIEL 9:23 –27
At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: The street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
This prophecy gives the time allotted to Daniel’s people, his Holy City and to bring to an end the transgressions against God. The angel gives the period in three sub-periods: seven weeks, sixty two weeks and then the final week, making seventy in all. All scholars agree that a week represents a period of seven years. Seven weeks is therefore forty nine years. Sixty two weeks is four hundred and thirty four years, and then the last week is seven years. The total period that the prophecy discusses is four hundred and ninety years.
The vision is received by Daniel in the first year of Darius, the king of the Medes. This means that Babylon has fallen, and the Medo-Persians under Darius and Cyrus are in control of the city of Babylon. The problem that most scholars have is to establish a starting date. There were many decrees concerning the return to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the city and the Temple. The question remains: which one was Daniel referring to?
536 BC: Decree by Cyrus allowing the rebuilding of the Temple.
520 BC: Date given for the rebuilding of the Temple.
519 BC: Darius confirms the decree by Cyrus.
If the Temple was in fact rebuilt in 520 BC, then why was it necessary to confirm the decree one year later? It is known that those that did not go into exile forcefully rejected any plans to rebuild the Temple and/or the city.
457 BC: Decree by Artaxerxes to Ezra to rebuild the Temple.
445 BC: Decree by Artaxerxes to Ezra and Nehemia to go ahead.
This indicates the extent of the resistence encountered by Ezra and Nehemia in their efforts to rebuild. Nearly a hundred years passed from the original decree and still nothing had been done. There also appears to have been another decree in 444 BC allowing Ezra and Nehemia to enforce the law and providing Persian military might as protection. Some sources maintain that this decree not only covered the rebuilding, but also the enforcement of the laws of Babylon that had been fiercely resisted in Judah.
The obvious problem caused by the starting date is not new. Circa 165 BC the Essene movement was established with the express purpose of providing a fighting force for the Messiah, who would destroy the enemies of Israel. From the writings of Daniel they knew exactly how many years after the order to expect the Messiah. There problem was the same as ours: which order? They settled for a compromise. They did not accept the cleansing of the Temple after Antiochus defiled it, formed their group, and waited. When the Temple was destroyed by Titus in 70 AD, they realised that the Messiah had come and gone, and they had not recognised Him. They then disbanded.
Dr Willie Macloud in a lecture set out his version of the dates showing an uncanny accuracy to the exact day! Using prophetic “days” of 360 day years, he reduces the 69 weeks (or 483 day/years) to the Messiah, to 476 years.
Crucifixion: 33 AD
Leaving 476-33= 443 years
There is no year zero, so we would need to look at a date of 444 BC and this corresponds with the final decree of Artaxerxes.
The reason for splitting the sixty nine weeks into Seven and sixty two is unclear to me. There must have been a significant event in history circa 395 BC that I have not been able to identify. This will probably be because the event may be of importance only to Judah and Jerusalem. The important point is to recognise that this whole period concerns the rebuilding of Jerusalem. The Temple is not mentioned in the prophecy up to this point. Daniel does point out that the rebuilding includes the streets and the walls, and would occur during “troublous” times.
At the end of this Sixty nine week period the Messiah would be “cut off”. This indicates that his life would not end naturally. The text: “but not for himself” is accepted as showing self sacrifice. Nevertheless, questions do remain regarding this portion of the prophecy.
The “prince that shall come” is accepted as the Romans. The Romans under Titus did in fact destroy the Temple completely in 70 AD. In 135 AD they destroyed Jerusalem and banned Jews from living there. Judea was renamed Palestine to rub salt into the wounds of the Judeans, because it was a reference to the Old Testament arch foes: the Phillistines.
“…and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.” The NWT: “And the end of it will be by the flood. And until [the] end there will be war; what is decided upon is desolations.” ’33 AT “…but his end will be with a flood, and until the end it will be war, determined destruction.” ’83 AT: “The end will come like a flood; there will be war to the end, disasters as decided.” Several things become clear: The “end” will be a flood, or “like” a flood. War will continue to the end of time. The desolations, destruction or disasters that will happen are decided and fixed (they cannot be avoided).
A moot point arises as to who, or what is being discussed. Is the flood going to end the city and the Temple, or is this a description of the end of the nation that destroyed the Temple and the city just over nineteen hundred years ago? The KJ and the NWT are ambiguous with the use of “the end thereof” and “the end of it” The ’83 AT just refers to “the end”. The ’33 AT is clearer in referring to “his end”. The semantics of the various translations could occupy us for more years than we have available. I tend to believe that the end referred to is the end of the “prince that will come”. I, therefore, expect Roman/Catholic rule to end either in a flood or like a flood.
We can then expect the Roman/Catholic leader to confirm a covenant with many. Many analysts are waiting for a treaty to be signed between Israel and Palestine (Islam). I believe this is incorrect, as the prince is clearly of the same nation that destroyed the city and the Temple. This means the Roman (European aristocracy plus Pope) leader will confirm an existing treaty with many. The many is given in Strong’s as just that: many, a large number. This could be with a large group like Islam or Christians, or countries like the UN. The ’83 AT: “The ruler will conclude a fixed agreement with VIP’s (leaders). The treaty will last for seven years.
“…In the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” “Midst” is used in the context of “in the middle”. The other translations agree that after three and a half years “he” (the Roman leader) will cause sacrifice and oblation (offering) to cease. Firstly: to cause the sacrifice to cease, we need a sacrifice, and that means we need a Temple. The Jews cannot make sacrifice anywhere else but in the Temple! The rebuilding of the Temple is obviously not an important event to Daniel. He does not refer to the initial rebuilding by Ezra, or that of Herod in 20 BC, but does refer to its destruction by the Romans.
Somewhere the Temple must be rebuilt. Scholars tend to point out that the scriptures do not say that the Temple will be rebuilt. This is correct, but by inference, the Jews cannot sacrifice to God without THE Temple. Obviously the Israelis agree with this A few months ago (April/May 2002) a group of orthodox Rabbis held a symbolic cornerstone laying ceremony on the Temple Mount. There were fears of full-scale war, because this had to happen right in front of the Mosque of Omar. All transpired peacefully, but take note! The Temple will be rebuilt, and three and a half years later, the sacrifice and oblation will again cease.
Look at the word oblation. It literally means offering. This is a practise in most Christian churches as well. Except in Germany. Income for the Church is included in state taxation. It is, therefore, unlawful for registered churches to ask for contributions from members to cover the upkeep of the church, or salaries of office bearers. Could we see such a system internationally?
Now we come to what I feel is the most remarkable text in the entire book of Daniel: “…and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” Have you ever seen anything quite so obscure?
NWT: “And upon the wing of disgusting things there will be one causing desolation; and until the extermination, the very thing decided upon will go pouring out also upon the one lying desolate.” ’33 AT: “…and on the wing of abominations there will be a destroyer, and surely to the end, and what was decided will be poured out over that which is desolate.” ’83 AT: “He will place a thing on the corner of the Temple which is an abomination against God, and will cause destruction, and it will stand there until everything is over. Then that which was decided as his lot will burst on the head of the ruler who caused so much destruction.”
This all appears to be most confusing. The key lies in the ’83 Afrikaans translation: “…a thing will be placed on the corner of the temple…” Anyone familiar with the layout on the Temple Mount knows that the Mosque is situated on the southern side. The Temple must stand directly in line with the East Gate, and there is more than enough space for its construction. Do we not have an abomination in this mosque situated “on the corner of” the Temple? Strongs indicates that “corner” is an acceptable translation, but so is “edge”. If so, then where is the other abomination?
I find it most amazing that everybody is quite happy with the magnificent Temple built by Herod Antipas. Herod is unequivocally an Idumean (Edomite). As such he MAY NOT have a hand in the building of the Jewish Temple. The Temple that stood on that spot from 20 BC to 70 AD was also an abomination to God. We now have two buildings that have been built by non-Israelites, side by side in the Temple courtyard. “The overspreading” of the abomination! The tensions between Israel and Islam, represented by the Palestinians, are increasing daily. Clearly when the situation is right, someone will light the fuse. That someone will be the one who confirmed the covenant with many, the leader of the nation that destroyed the Temple in 70 AD.
We should not lose sight of the seven week period. If we go back to the Prophecy of the ram, then we find a period which indicates 2005 AD as the date “then shall the sanctuary be cleansed”. I believe that this is when the new Temple is built on the Temple Mount. My contention that John Hyrcanus was an Idumean, leads me to conclude that the bulk of today’s Jews have a good portion of Idumean blood. A Temple involving them perpetuates the abomination built by Herod. Verse 27 states “…even until the consummation,” This means that the abominations will stand to the very end. If we accept 2005 AD as the date for the rebuilding of the Temple, then that is the date for the last seven year period. 2008-2009 will be the time that the sacrifice ceases, and 2012 AD will be the date for destruction without [human] hands.
Also in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him. And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. And a Mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
Once again Daniel expands on his previous prophecies. In this case that means from the Medo-Persians onward.
The first verse is very significant. NWT: “…I stood up as a strengthener and as a fortress to him.” All the translations have similar wording. What is there about Darius that the Prophet of God stands up for him as a “strengthener and a fortress.” Bear in mind my approach that the Medes and the Persians were an extension of the Ten Tribes. Cyrus the Persian is called “the anointed of God” in Isaiah. The full text of Isaiah 24:28 and 25:1 is very curious:
[Thus saith the Lord] …That saith to Cyrus [He is] my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: Even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thou shalt be laid. (25:1) Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut.”
This does not make sense if Cyrus was a heathen and a gentile. We can only understand it in the context that Cyrus was an Israelite.
Diplomatically Daniel says that this vision was received in the first year of Darius, the Mede. He then goes on to give the future of the Persian throne. Cyrus was on the throne of Persia at this stage. After him followed three lesser kings, followed by the great Xerxes. He was more powerful, richer and mightier than the four Persian kings before him, exactly as Daniel described him. Daniel also says that he will mobilise against the Greeks. Xerxes was the king that defeated the Greeks of the classic battle of Thermopylae against the Spartans.
Daniel then speaks of a king who will rise after Xerxes. This is Alexander the Macedonian, who took the world by storm. As prophesied: when he stood up his kingdom was divided into four, but not to his descendents. Alexander is said to have drank himself to death, which is hard to believe as he was moving around the country at great speed. The same historians do not hesitate to tell us that his entire family was wiped out to ensure that there were no heirs.
His four generals divided his kingdom into four lesser kingdoms. The four were: Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus and Ptolemy. Cassander and Lysimachus leapt at each others throats, and Seleucus took out the winner, consolidating the three kingdoms into one, described by Daniel as the North. Ptolemy, on the other hand picked up a few coastal areas and islands while the others were not looking, and established the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt. Daniel calls him the king of the south.
And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion, and in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the kings daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times. But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: and shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.
This may sound like so much nonsense, but with a little help from history we can appreciate the amazing gift of Daniel.
Ptolemy and Seleucus concluded a peace agreement. According to the terms Seleucus would divorce his wife, Laodice, and take Ptolemy’s daughter, Berenice, as wife. This was to guarantee peace between the kingdoms. Ptolemy sent his daughter with a group of servants and a large dowry, and the wedding duly took place. Seleucus immediately took back Laodice and her children, ignoring Berenice. Laodice did not trust the situation, and promptly poisoned Seleucus. She also poisoned Berenice and her whole entourage who accompanied her from Egypt. Laodice then started plotting to put her son on the throne.
Berenice’s brother, Ptolemy Euergetes, had succeeded his father as king of the south. He immediately raised a large army and attacked the north. He was well on the way to capturing the whole kingdom, when he received word of an impending uprising in Egypt, and was forced to return. Nevertheless, he took a large treasure back with him, including the idols and gods of the country. Daniel was once again on the mark.
Daniel 11: 9-13.
So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his land. But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and shall pass through: ten shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress. And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand. And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it. For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
The sons of Seleucus eagerly gathered a large army to attack Ptolemy. The heir to the throne was then murdered by the generals before any action could take place, and Antiochus Magnus ascended the throne of the north. He conquered much of the territory lost by his father. Antiochus defeated the Egyptian general Nicholas, and then concluded a peace treaty. Both sides sued for peace, but prepared for war. This sounds like any modern peace treaty, does it not?
At about the same time as Antiochus Magnus took the throne in the north, Ptolemy Philopator succeeded to the throne of the south. He was a lazy king, used to luxury, but intrinsically evil. Eventually he became angry and bitter and gathered a large army to go against Antiochus. Antiochus was defeated, but Philopator was an idle fellow, and he agreed to peace instead of conquering Antiochus completely.
Ptolemy then made a grave error. On the way back he stopped in Jerusalem to sacrifice at the Temple. The Jews forbid this, and he swore vengeance, but had made a bad enemy.
And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall. So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand. But he that cometh against him shall do according to his will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed. He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and the upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him. After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
The peace between Ptolemy Philopator and Antiochus Magnus lasted fourteen years. During this time Ptolemy is said to have engaged in a vendetta against the Jews of Egypt, but especially in Alexandria. In 250 BC Ptolemy had requested that the Old Testament be translated into Greek. A large contingent of Jews, specifically scholars, had settled in Alexandra for this purpose, and had remained on completion of the task. Philopator supposedly killed thousands of them.
Philopator was such a poor ruler that the people rose up against him. He eventually died of overindulgence, and was succeeded by his son Ptolemy Epiphanes who was only five years old. Antiochus did not hesitate, and gathered a large army to attack the boy king. The young king’s prime minister, Agathocles, who ruled as regent, made many enemies, not least of which were the Jews. There was so much unrest in Egypt that the prime minister could not control the situation. That was when Antiochus made his move.
Enter a new player on the world political scene: Rome. The Romans had up to this point stayed out of Egypt, but now decided to intervene on the side of the young Epiphanes. Antiochus and Philip of Macedonia had made plans to share the southern kingdom, and did not expect much resistance. This was when Rome decided to become involved in the affairs of Egypt.
The Romans undertook the task of teaching Ptolemy. They sent Emilius Lepidus to Egypt charged with this task. To counter the attack by Antiochus and Philip, they sent a well known general, Scopa, to assemble an army and take care of the threat. Scopa moved north and recaptured Judea. Antiochus immediately retaliated and defeated Scopa, and laid siege to Sidon. Three other Egyptian generals were sent to lift the siege, but were also defeated.
Rome then sent Pompei to clear up the mess. Antiochus had been replaced by his son, Antiochus Epiphanes, who in turn was replaced by Antiochus Asiaticus. He was defeated by Pompei in 65 BC, and Syria became a province of Rome.
Now follows a piece of history that is curious to say the least. John Hyrcanus I, king of Judea, was succeeded by John Hyrcanus II. John Hyrcanus was locked in a battle for the throne with his “brother”, Aristobulus. While most history sources show them as brothers, one source claims that Aristobulus was the true claimant to the throne of Judea. John Hyrcanus I is shown by history to have been the king of Judea who defeated the Idumeans (Edomites). Mosaic Law required him to kill them, but instead he accepted them into the Judaic faith! This is unheard of. Never have the Israelites or the Jews, for that matter, canvassed for members. People were just not encouraged to join them. John Hyrcanus I offers the excuse that they were descendents of Esau, and hence, Abraham. For this reason he accepted them “into the Jewish fold”.
John Hyrcanus II Succeeded him, and was in turn succeeded by Herod Antipas, who was undeniably an Idumean. This indicates that the history offered to us is a fabrication, and John Hyrcanus I was the Idumean victor of the war against Judea! The only other time a group has been accepted into the Judaic faith is in the eighth century, when the equally mysterious Khassars conquered the Middle East and promptly accepted the faith and four thousand adult men are said to have been circumcised. Regardless of the history books, I have similar doubts about the existence of this group.
Nevertheless John Hyrcanus II requested help from Pompei against Aristobulus. Pompei stepped in as a mediator to prevent a war in the area. Again history tells us that Aristobulus tried to bribe Pompei with an offer of money. Pompei sent an emissary to collect the cash, only to have Aristobulus change his mind. Pompei arrived with his army, and John Hyrcanus opened the gates of Jerusalem and invited them in. Aristobulus and his men are said to have taken refuge in the Temple. Pompei sacked the Temple, and killed many. Other sources say that Hyrcanus as an Idumean, allowed the Romans to enter, while the true Jews went to the Temple to pray. Pompei attacked this defenceless group, and handed the crown to Hyrcanus as reward. Herod Antipater rebuilt the Temple in 20 BC.
An army of “Jews” was sent on the side of Pompei against Egypt and are said to have been a deciding factor in the campaign. The Jews in fact only contributed three thousand men in an army of one hundred thousand. The real assistance was allowing and assisting the Romans to cross Judea to Egypt.
A Quarrel broke out between Pompei and Julius Caesar. This resulted in a pitched battle at Pharsalus. Ptolemy, defeated fled to Egypt, where he was killed before Julius could reach him. Some sources say that he committed suicide. Ptolemy Auletes died in 51 BC and left his crown to his nine year old son, and his daughter Cleopatra. Caesar took control of Egypt. He had a son by Cleopatra before returning to Rome where he was killed before he could be given the honour of being declared emperor.
Rome was then ruled by a triumvirate consisting of Octavius, who was later given the title of Augustus by the senate, Mark Anthony and Lepidus. Mark Anthony was sent to Egypt as a representative of Rome. It was not long before he fell for Cleopatra. Augustus followed him to Egypt and Anthony was defeated in a naval battle of Ambrasia. Cleopatra had accompanied the fleets into battle against Mark Anthony’s wishes. She inexplicably gave the order for the royal ship to withdraw. The entire Egyptian fleet followed, and Mark Anthony equally inexplicably ordered his ships to follow, effectively handing the victory to Octavius. All Mark Anthony’s confederates deserted him, and he committed suicide. Just as Daniel had prophesied, Cleopatra was not on the side of any of her men.
Daniel 11: 20
Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger or in battle. And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
Augustus took over as emperor from his uncle Julius Caesar. He is known for increasing taxes throughout the Empire. It was he who gave the order to hold the census at the time if the Birth of Jesus, in order to improve taxation. As Daniel said he died at a ripe old age of 76 in his bed. He was succeeded by Tiberius who was described by Octavius as too vile to rule. He was linked to so many sudden deaths and poisonings, that it is correct to say that he came by the throne through deception and flattery.
The accuracy of Daniel’s prophecies has been shown beyond doubt. I will therefore not try to identify each person that is indicated by Daniel. Firstly because Daniel does not mention each ruler from here on, but just gives the highlights, and secondly it becomes an impossible task to wade through the histories of the nations concerned to find one that fits the description.
Here we must look at the prophecies from the point of view of who is being prophesied? The prophecies are all aimed at the “world”, in that they covered the world as it was known at that time. So far not one of the rulers can be classed as a Judean or Jewish. The Seventy week Prophecy is specifically aimed at Israel, Judah and Jerusalem. I believe that this is also the case here. Although the kings listed are from Persia, Greece and Rome, they are from Israel, and they have all played a major role in the history of Jerusalem.
In studying the prophecies I will naturally look for certain important events. Firstly, the birth of Jesus. This is covered by Daniel in a reference to the Prince of princes, and as the Messiah who is “cut off”. Secondly the establishment of Islam. In 622 AD Mohamet started his teaching. He died ten years later in 632 AD. He was succeeded by Abu Bakr who led for two years. After his death the Kalif Omar took over. He went on a conquest of the Middle East and eventually captured Jerusalem. He then built the Mosque on the Temple Mount, alongside the site of Herod’s Temple. Clearly this mosque is one of the abominations mentioned by Daniel.
And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall become strong with a small people. He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him. Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed. Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land. At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the god of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain. And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away with many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
By studying history we can find sufficient rulers to fit the descriptions given. It would actually be surprising if we could not. Only a small number of the leaders are described, that leads me to conclude that some of the descriptions are of an office as opposed to an office bearer. As Daniel describes the king of the north as one person, it is clear that he is referring to a dynasty, or even several dynasties.
Verse 36: And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
I believe that this in all probability refers to the Pope. He bears the titles (amongst others) of “God on earth” and Vicar of God. His word is accepted by all Catholics as the infallible word of God. Then, who can deny that the Catholic Church has, and is prospering by all this. This is also an example of the “leader” representing a hierarchy over more than a thousand years.
Another interesting verse is verse 40: “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come at him like a whirlwind,…” It seems clear that the “him” is the same leader referred to in verse 36 (In fact verses 37, 38 and 39 seem to point directly at Papacy). Nevertheless verse 40 describes one who is attacked by the kings of north and south. “…and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.” Catholicism is in all countries, and in many countries it either runs the government, or holds and inordinate share of the power.
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, o Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And he said, go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made whit, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shall rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
This is the final chapter in Daniel and flows out of the prophecy in chapter 11. Daniel is told to seal the book till the end times. People will only understand the prophecies in these times, but until then Daniel should not concern himself unduly about them.
In verse 7 we come across another reference to the “time, times, and a half” that we have seen before, and are found in Revelations as well. The fact that it occurs several times may mean that it has several meanings. Firstly, it could mean three and a half years, and secondly it could refer to three and a half times three hundred and sixty days/years (1260 years).
It may be significant that circa 750 AD (1260 years ago) The Roman Church emerged as the largest single power on earth, after duping Dagobert more than a hundred years earlier. Also the Jewish Sanhedrin had just established itself in Spain with the Muslim Khalif, while the “Khassars” were in charge in the holy land, effectively completing the “…to scatter the power of the holy people…”
Some scholars believe that the three and a half years refers to the period that the Temple was unclean after being desecrated by Antiochus in 169 BC. I cannot go for this simply because the chronology is out. The angel is clearly taking about the end times, and that does not include Antiochus. We again have the reference to the cessation of the sacrifice, which would tend to lend weight to the idea that the Temple would be rebuilt, and then the sacrifice will be stopped three and a half years later.
Any, or all, of these may be correct.
The final facts given to Daniel are 1290 days from the (end of the sacrifice) “abomination that maketh desolate set up”, and that blessed are those who wait 1335 days. These seems confusing and contradictory.
I read that there will be 1335 days from the setting up of the abomination to the “end”. Using the 360/365 and a quarter days ratio, I find that 1335days equates to 1316 years. To establish a starting point I start at 262 BC, the start of Roman intervention in world affairs. The “2300 days” takes me to 2004/2005 AD (this includes the building of the Temple possibly in 2005). Then the last week (seven years) of the seventy weeks kicks in to take me to 2012. Going backwards from 2012 by 1316 years puts me in 786 AD. Check the closeness of the previous calculation to 750 AD. It is in this period that Khalif Omar built the Mosque on the Temple mount. Note: one of the abominations!
Now, using this as a starting date, 1290 days equates to 1272 years. Moving forward from 786 AD puts me in 1968 AD, which corresponds to the war in which Israeli forces captured the old city of Jerusalem, allowing Jews to pray at the wailing wall for the first time under Israeli control. Pure co-incidence? You tell me!
I must add that this reference to “daily sacrifice” is usually an inferred reference. The actual word being “continuing”, and in some cases could actually be taken to refer to “continuing transgression against God”. I am not qualified to be emphatic on this point, but I need not say what sounds logical and what not. One point that cannot be argued is that Daniel refers to “sanctuary” from time to time. This may be a reference to the Temple, but then again may simply refer to Jerusalem. He certainly does not place much emphasis on the Temple as such.
As a guideline I shall set out a calendar of expected events. I must stress that no one can say for certain when what will happen. My own approach is that if no 1 comes about, then the likelihood of no 2 increases. If no 2 happens then we can be reasonably sure that no 3 is on the cards, and so on. Each “hit” will increase the probability of the rest falling into line.
1: 2002: Islam to control Africa.
2: 2003: War in the Middle East and Europe.
3: 2004: Advent of Imam Mehdi (Islam) and Messiah.
4: 2005: Construction of the Temple.
5: 2008/9 Interruption in sacrifice? End of first period.
6: 2012: End of time.
Muslims identified a prophecy in the Q’uran some time ago, which reads: In the year in which a Lunar Eclipse and a Solar Eclipse occur in the same month, the Imam and the Judaeo Christian Messiah will appear. In addition they believe that these two are expressly sent by God to bring peace to a war-torn earth. They have thus been feverishly planning a major war in this period for some time now. Their problem is that they cannot take the chance that the date is incorrect. They have to go ahead with the plans for war regardless. While the advent is prophecy, the war is being planned.
A certain Mr Anderson recently placed adverts in all the major newspapers warning that the second coming can be expected on 17 July 2002. He based his statement on a text in Hosea to the effect that we will be made alive again in two days. Working on the basis that a day is a thousand years of 360 days, and that the crucifixion occurred in 31 AD, he arrived at his date. If he had used the accepted date of 33 AD for the crucifixion he would be exactly on the date of the Muslim prophecy of 2004.
It now remains to study Revelations, and see if the Daniel prophecies are expanded on in the same way as has been shown. It may be possible to add weight to some of the suppositions, and to clarify events that have been prophesied.
